Celebrity Weekly: Pharell Williams

"The people have allowed me to - they've respected my choice of wanting to be like, a little, you know, a baby alchemist, and just trying to mix different cultures together and things that I think are interesting."

A Grammy-winning producer, songwriter, and artist behind a staggering quantity of R&B, rap, and pop hits, Pharrell Williams not only helped change the face of pop beginning in the late '90s. He also was one of the faces of pop music -- as a charismatic star who often stole the show when producing and/or guesting on other artists' hit singles. His presence was unfading, whether he was the one billed at the top or the one behind a beat.
To trace the beginning of his ascent, you have to go back to 1992, when Teddy Riley tapped him to write a verse for Wreckx-n-Effect's "Rump Shaker." Since the late '90s, Williams and longtime friend Chad Hugo -- known together as the Neptunes -- began scoring songwriting and production assignments that slowly but steadily infiltrated mainstream music, whether it was via dance-pop (Britney Spears' "I'm a Slave 4 U"), hardcore rap (Clipse's "Grindin'"), or contemporary R&B (Babyface's "There She Goes"). Williams and Hugo were relatively obscure during the mid-'90s, doing spare work for the likes of SWV, Total, and Mase, but they would eventually develop a style that would become as recognized and as mimicked as that of fellow Virginia Beach native Timbaland. (Prior to stardom, all three producers were in a band together called Surrounded by Idiots.)
As the duo took on more work, Williams' voice became increasingly familiar. He was now more likely to provide the chorus and the background vocals of the same song, in addition to appearing in the video. (Check out Jay-Z's "Excuse Me Miss" and Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful" for two examples.) It wasn't until the summer of 2003 that he truly stepped out on his own. He released his first solo single, "Frontin'." Produced with Hugo and featuring a guest verse from Jay-Z, the song built anticipation for The Neptunes Present... Clones, a compilation of all-new tracks from artists produced by the duo. "Frontin'" was a ubiquitous summer hit and kept Williams' momentum running up to the release of Hugo and Williams' second funk/rock-oriented N.E.R.D. album, released in March 2004. Williams' first solo album, In My Mind, survived a number of delays and was finally issued in July 2006. The set, produced by Williams alone, debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 chart.
Although Williams didn't release another solo album for eight years, his name, as well as that of the Neptunes, continued to carry much weight. The remainder of the 2000s was filled with commercially successful collaborations with the likes of Clipse, Britney Spears, Jay-Z, Solange, and Madonna. There was a handful of Grammy nominations, as well as a surprising 2007 win for Ludacris' "Money Maker" in the Best Rap Song category. N.E.R.D., who released their third album, Seeing Sounds, in 2008, remained an an occasional diversion.
The following decade began with a steady stream of activity. Williams was responsible for much of the music for the animated comedy Despicable Me. Along with outside production and songwriting work, Williams and Hugo put together Nothing, the fourth N.E.R.D. album. During 2011 and 2012, Williams produced most of Gloria Estefan's Miss Little Havana, dozens of cuts for R&B, rap, and pop artists, and tracks for two of the most praised albums of the early 2010s: Kendrick Lamar's Good Kid, M.A.A.D. City and Frank Ocean's Channel Orange. (Williams won a Grammy for his role in the latter.)
The roll continued through 2013. "Blurred Lines," a Hot 100 chart-topper from Robin Thicke, featured Williams as producer, co-songwriter, and featured artist. He co-wrote and fronted "Get Lucky" and "Lose Yourself to Dance," two songs from Daft Punk's number one Billboard 200 album Random Access Memories.

The soundtrack for Despicable Me 2 contained several Williams songs, led by the worldwide smash hit "Happy," for which he conceived a 24-hour music video. When the nominees for the 2014 Grammy Awards were announced, Williams' name appeared in seven categories. "Get Lucky" won Record of the Year, Random Access Memories won Album of the Year, and, most notably, Williams won the award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical. Williams signed to Columbia, home of Daft Punk, and released his second album, G I R L, in March 2014. It reached number two on the pop charts, by which time "Happy" had achieved yet more success, becoming one of the top-selling digital singles of all time with sales of more than five million. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Celebrity Weekly: Shakira

"In this life, to earn your place you have to fight for it."

After achieving superstardom throughout Latin America, Colombian-born Shakira became Latin pop's biggest female crossover artist since Jennifer Lopez. Noted for her aggressive, rock-influenced approach, Shakira maintained an extraordinary degree of creative control over her music, especially for a female artist; she wrote or co-wrote nearly all of her own material, and in the process gained a reputation as one of Latin music's most ambitiously poetic lyricists. When she released her first English material in late 2001, she became an instant pop sensation, thanks to her quirky poetic sense and a sexy video image built on her hip-shaking belly dance moves.
Shakira Mebarak (full name: Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll) was born February 2, 1977, in Barranquilla, Colombia, into a poor family. Her mother was a native Colombian and her father was of Lebanese descent, and so as a child Shakira soaked up music from both cultures; she also listened heavily to English-language rock & roll, listing her favorite bands in later interviews as Led Zeppelin, the Beatles, the Police, the Cure, and Nirvana. Shakira wrote her first song at age eight, began entering (and winning) talent competitions at age ten, and started learning the guitar at age 11 (one story runs that around this age, she was kicked out of her school choir for singing too forcefully). In 1990, at age 13, Shakira moved to Bogotá in hopes of pursuing a modeling career, but wound up signing a record deal with Sony's Colombian division instead. Her 1991 debut album, Magia, was comprised of songs she'd written over the past five or six years, including some of her earliest efforts. Although it didn't break internationally, the record started to make a name for her in her home country. Dissatisfied with the pop inclinations of the follow-up, 1993's Peligro, Shakira changed direction for a time, joining the cast of the Colombian soap opera El Oasis in 1994.

When Shakira returned to recording in 1995, she asserted more control over the direction of her music and worked more rock & roll rhythms -- as well as occasional Arabic tinges -- into her Latin pop material. The first results were Pies Descalzos, which was initially released in 1995; a slow seller at first, the album gradually caught on thanks to "Estoy Aqui," which became a hit all over Latin America, as well as Spain. After that breakthrough, Pies Descalzos just kept spinning off singles: "Dónde Estás Corazón?," "Antología," "Pienso en Ti," "Un Poco de Amor," "Se Quiere, Se Mata." The album hit number one in eight different countries and eventually went platinum in the U.S. as well; Shakira toured for nearly two years promoting it (she finally left El Oasis in 1997).
Seeking to build on her success, Shakira signed Emilio Estefan -- Gloria's husband and a highly successful music-biz insider -- as her manager and producer. The move paid off when her follow-up album, 1998's Dónde Están los Ladrones? (Where Are the Thieves?), became an even bigger worldwide hit than its predecessor. What was more, it cracked the lucrative U.S. market wide open, spending 11 weeks at number one on Billboard's Latin album chart and producing two U.S. number ones (on the Latin chart) with "Ciega, Sordomuda" and "Tu." The album's signature track, however, was the worldwide hit "Ojos Así," her most explicit nod yet to the Arabic music she'd picked up from her father (not to mention its latent belly dancing connotations). Dónde Están los Ladrones? was also the most effective presentation yet of Shakira's strong-willed persona; her self-analysis made her even more popular among female fans, while her anger over love gone wrong drew comparisons to Alanis Morissette.

When Gloria Estefan offered to translate "Ojos Así" into English, the prospect of a crossover suddenly seemed tangible, and Shakira decided that the most effective way to maintain control over her material was to learn English well enough to write in it herself. In the meantime, she set the stage for her crossover bid with a performance on MTV Unplugged, the channel's first Spanish-language broadcast. MTV Unplugged was released as an album in early 2000, and topped the Latin charts for two weeks on its way to becoming her third straight platinum album; it also won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. At the inaugural Latin Grammy Awards ceremony in 2000, Shakira delivered a much-discussed, show-stopping performance of "Ojos Así" and took home Unplugged-related trophies for Best Female Pop Vocal ("Ojos Así") and Best Female Rock Vocal ("Octavo Dia").

Mainstream pop stardom beckoned. Shakira dyed her long brown hair blonde, romanced Antonio de la Rua (son of the former president of Argentina), and went to work on her first (mostly) English-language album, Laundry Service. The single/video "Whenever, Wherever" was released in advance of the album in late 2001, and made her a star in the English-speaking world almost overnight. Laundry Service entered the American pop charts at number three, and "Whenever, Wherever" climbed into the Top Ten of the singles chart, peaking at number six. The follow-up, "Underneath Your Clothes," also hit the Top Ten, halting at number nine; less than a year after its release, Laundry Service had gone triple platinum. Reviews of Laundry Service were divided as to the effectiveness of Shakira's English lyrics, but nearly all agreed on her unique poetic imagery.
Extensive touring to support Laundry Service led to a long break for the singer, so a remix collection (2002's Laundry Service: Washed and Dried) and a live album (2004's Live & Off the Record) appeared in lieu of a new album. Revitalized, Shakira began the writing process for her next release and soon had 60 songs ready to go, some in English, some in Spanish; 20 of those songs were selected and divided up by language to make two different albums. Both appeared in 2005 and both hit the Top Ten, with the Spanish-language album Fijacion Oral, Vol. 1 leading the way in June with a number four placing and the English-language album, Oral Fixation, Vol. 2, following in November at number five. As sales of Oral Fixation began to slow in early 2006, Epic reissued the album in March with a bonus track, "Hip Don't Lie." The newly recorded song went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart in June, becoming one of the summer's biggest hits and reviving sales of Oral Fixation, as well as Shakira's entire back catalog.
Shakira signed a ten-year contract with Live Nation in 2008, prompting Forbes to deem her the fourth top-earning female musician in history. She also worked heavily on another album, traveling to multiple cities while collaborating with such producers as RedOne, Wyclef Jean, and Luis F. Ochoa. She Wolf was completed in 2009 and readied for release in October, marking her third English-language album. The electro-disco heavy She Wolf didn't make many commercial waves, performing well in Europe, Colombia and Mexico but not in the US, yet Shakira quickly bounced back in 2010 with "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)," the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup that became an international smash hit. On the heels of its success came Sale el Sol in the fall of 2010, an album largely recorded in Spanish that continued her remarkable worldwide success. A live album from Sale el Sol's supporting tour, Shakira: Live from Paris, appeared in time for the 2011 Christmas season.

In 2012, Shakira replaced Christina Aguilera as a coach on the American hit musical talent show The Voice. She initially served for only one season, leaving in 2013, and after her departure she finalized her tenth album. Called Shakira, the record saw release in March 2014, preceded by the Rihanna duet hit "Can't Remember to Forget You." Shakira also served on The Voice again for season six of the series. ~ Steve Huey, Rovi

Celebrity Weekly: Usher

"Success is about dedication. You may not be where you want to be or do what you want to do when you're on the journey. But you've got to be willing to have vision and foresight that leads you to an incredible end."

After Usher Raymond was spotted by a LaFace record executive at a talent show in his hometown of Atlanta, his career took off in no time. The 14-year-old auditioned for LaFace co-founder L.A. Reid, who signed the gospel choir boy to a recording contract. Raymond was introduced to the world simply as "Usher," and released his debut album of the same name in 1994, which featured co-executive producer Sean "Puffy" Combs. The first single, "Think of You," gained Usher wide recognition and reached gold status. From that initial exposure, Usher was approached to do other projects. In 1995, he recorded a national holiday jingle for Coca-Cola. He also joined several top male R&B vocalists to form Black Men United for the single "You Will Know," featured on the Jason's Lyric soundtrack. He also teamed with teen singing sensation Monica for a duet remake of Latimore's "Let's Straighten It Out."
After graduating from high school, Usher released his sophomore album, My Way, in 1997. In an attempt to display his maturity and songwriting abilities, he co-wrote six of the nine songs and enlisted the help of producers Jermaine Dupri, Babyface, and, again, Combs. The album's first single, "You Make Me Wanna," reestablished Usher as one of R&B's hottest artists, and also made him a crossover sensation; it topped the R&B charts for 11 weeks, hit number two pop, and eventually went double platinum. Both of the follow-up singles, "Nice & Slow" and "My Way," also went platinum; the former stayed at number one on the R&B charts for eight weeks and became his first number one pop single. In the meantime, Usher launched an acting career, appearing in the 1998 horror spoof The Faculty and the 1999 urban high-school drama Light It Up.
To tide fans over, he issued a concert recording titled simply Live in 1999. Usher returned with his third proper album, All About U, toward the end of 2000. His third album, 8701 (2001), moved him from a teen pop star to a sultry R&B singer. In early 2004, Arista released the single "Yeah!" Produced by Lil Jon and guesting Ludacris, the addictive, lightly crunk cut fast became a club and radio favorite.
By the time the Usher full-length Confessions dropped later that March, "Yeah!" had hit the top of the Billboard charts. The album itself was Usher's most mature work to date and won the Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album in 2004, while "Yeah!" took home the best rapped/sung collaboration award. He starred in 2005's In the Mix and went back to music with 2008's Here I Stand, an album that topped the Billboard 200 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.
Raymond v Raymond, inspired in part by the end of his marriage, was released in 2010 as three of its songs were climbing the charts. Its buzz single, "Papers," had already topped the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart. An EP titled Versus followed later in the year. Led by Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart-topper "Climax" (co-produced by Diplo), Looking 4 Myself was issued in June 2012, driven by the Top Ten single "Scream," and it became Usher's fourth number one album. One year later, he served as a coach for the NBC reality show The Voice , substituting for Cee Lo Green. -Steve Huey, Rovi

Celebrity Weekly : Ariana Grande - Sing it like Mariah

" I love the way you make me feel"

Ariana Grande is the new up and comer pop star. Originally starting her career on Broadway & Television, this global superstar is a force to be reckon with. Here is her story just in case you don't know it.

Ariana Grande was born on June 26, 1993 in Boca Raton, Florida to Joan Grande, CEO of telephone and alarm system company Hose-McCann Communications, and Edward Butera, who owns a graphic design firm. She is of italian descent. She has a half-brother named Frankie, who is also a actor. Growing up in Boca Raton, Ariana performed with the Fort Lauderdale Children's Theatre with roles like Annie and Beauty & the Beast.  She also performed at a Karaoke lounge and singing with orchestras and more. She made her tv debut singing the national anthem for the Florida Panthers. She later became serious about her music career and acting career so she moved to Los Angeles. This is when she got her role as Charlotte the cheerleader on 13 the Broadway musical in 2008. She also won a National Youth Theatre Association Award for this role Go Ari!

In 2009, she auditioned for the Nickelodeon television show Victorious in New York along with 13 co-star Elizabeth Gillies. She played Cat valentine a student who is friends with the protagonist, Tori Vega, played by Victoria justice. Its about a group of friends who go to a Performing Arts High School. When she landed the role, Grande had to dye her hair red every other week because the executive producer, Dan Schneider, did not want all cast members to be brunettes, and was also a feature that the network felt would fit the personality of Cat. The show premiered on March 27, 2010 to the second largest audience for a live-action series in Nickelodeon history with 5.7 million viewers. The role helped propel Grande to teen idol status, but she was more interested in a music career stating that acting is "fun, but music has always been first and foremost with me." In 2010, she played the role of Miriam in the musical Cuba Libre, which was written and produced by songwriter Desmond Child.

After season one of Victorious wrapped, Grande wanted to focus on her music career and began working on her debut album in August 2010. She made her first musical appearance on the track "Give It Up" on the soundtrack Victorious: Music from the Hit TV Show in August 2011. While filming Victorious, Grande made several recordings of herself singing covers of Adele, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey, and uploaded them on YouTube which i have top to say are amazing. Monte Lipman, CEO of Republic Records, came across one of Grande's videos and signed her to a recording contract. She released her first single "Put Your Hearts Up", in December which was cut during sessions for a teen-oriented pop album that was held up by numerous delays.Unsatisfied with the direction of her music, she later disowned the track for its bubblegum pop sound and had no interest in recording music of that genre. So here i the music video for "Put Your Hearts Up" enjoy!

A second soundtrack, Victorious 2.0, was released on June 5, 2012 as an extended play. After three seasons, it was announced in August 2012 that Victorious would not be renewed which was really sad because that was one of the best shows Nickelodeon had. That was not the end to Cat Valentine. On August 2, Entertainment Weekly announced that Nickelodeon had officially ordered an iCarly and Victorious spin-off pilot starring Jennette McCurdy and Grande. The sitcom titled Sam & Cat, paired Grande and McCurdy together in a traditional "buddy sitcom" setting as roommates who form an after-school babysitting business, It premiered on June 8, 2013. Despite being a success in the ratings, the series was canceled due to Grande's rising musical career and behind-the-scenes drama, with the final episode airing on July 17, 2014 something about cast and crew pay checks. In December 2012, she collaborated on the single version of "Popular Song", a duet with British singer and songwriter Mika. She also starred as Snow White in a pantomime production called A Snow White Christmas, with Charlene Tilton and Neil Patrick Harris, at the Pasadena Playhouse. Popular song hit high on the pop charts and i can see why just listen to it.

She recorded her debut album, Yours Truly, for over 3yrs. The album was released August 30, 2013. In September 2013, it debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart—with 138,000 copies sold in its first week—making Grande the first female artist, since Kesha, to have her first album debut atop of the charts—and the fifteenth female artist overall. Once again go Ari!  It was also in the top 10 for several countries around the world. By April 2014, the album had sold more than 500,000 copies in the United States, making it Grande's first gold album.

The lead single, "The Way" featuring Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller, debuted at No. 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100, eventually peaking at No. 9 for two weeks, and spent 26 weeks on the Hot 100. The music video hit some controversy  for Ariana kissing Mac Miller while she was dating someone else. She also got sued for stealing a line from a 1972 song. I mean who cares the song is awesome so whatever. For your viewing pleasure here is The Way.

Following the release of the album, Billboard magazine ranked Grande at No. 4 on their list of "Music's Hottest Minors 2013", an annual ranking of the most popular musicians under the age of 21. The second single, "Baby I" debuted at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, making it her second Top 40 hit. The song also debuted at number six on the US Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart, making Grande the only female music artist to debut two songs in the top ten of the Hot Digital Songs chart during the year 2013. The third single, "Right There", featuring Detroit rapper Big Sean, debuted at number 84 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. I have to say both songs are AMAZING they are still on my Top 10 OK. Here are both songs.

In 2013 she got the role as Amanda Benson in the movie Swindle along her Sam & Cat co-star Jennette McCurdy which premiered that August.
She  joined Justin Bieber on his Believe Tour for three shows and kicked off her own headlining tour, The Listening Sessions. She also generated controversy when she posted a photo on instagram with Justin kissing her on the tour bus. At the 2013 American Music Awards, she won the award for New Artist of the Year and was the most mentioned artist on Twitter that night after her spectacular performance of her song Tattooed Heart. She released a four-song Christmas EP, Christmas Kisses in December 2013.Christmas Kisses received critical praise for its "R&B spin" on the Christmas classics. I usually do not like Christmas Album since Mariah Carey, but this Diva brought me back to my roots.

She released her second album, My Everything on August 25, 2014. She receive alot of praise for this album, Rolling Stone called it the album where the Starlet grows up. It sold 169,00 copies it first week and made #1 on Bilboard 200 becoming her 2nd consecutive No. 1 album in the US. The song Problem featuring Iggy Azalea became the song of the summer and debuted No. 3 but climbed up to No. 2. It debut No. 1 for several countries around the world as well. It made British chart history as the first song to land at No. 1 based on sales and streams. She won Best Pop video for this song on the MTV Video Music Awards.  Here is the music video for Problem with a Mod 60s style.

The second single, "Break Free", featuring , Zedd, peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs. She also released a song with Jessie J, and Nicki Minaj called Bang Bang for Jessie's album Sweet Talker. The song reached No. 3 in the US, Grande's third song in the Hot 100's top ten the same week It also went to No.1 in the UK. She joined Adele as the only female artist with three top ten hits simultaneously as a lead artist. Here is the music video for Bang Bang which was released on the night of the MTV Video Music Awards.

The third single from My Everything, "Love Me Harder", featuring  The Weeknd, debuted on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number seven. On November 24, 2014, Grande released a Christmas song titled "Santa Tell Me." Ariana is going back to our tv screen as she will guest-star as a recurring role on the upcoming Fox new comedy-horror TV series Scream Queens, created by Ryan Murphy. I can't wait for it.

She currently going on her Honeymoon Tour, which i plan to go to. She is also dating Big Sean after moths of suspicion over them, but were finally caught when pictures of them kissing on a roller coaster surfaced. She also been caught up in some controversies. One being her as a "DIVA" after forcing people to carry her around, and lashing out on people. I think is a load of crap, look at her she is an angel. Even her ex-beau, Big Sean, went on the Breakfast Club and said that is bull crap. Anyway, she is also guest starring in alot of songs, like Nicki Minaj's song "Get on your Knees". She also became a vegan and , participated at the charitable Stand Up to Cancer television program, performing the title track "My Everything" in dedication to her grandfather, who had died from cancer in July.

Ariana Grande is just starting soon she will not be known as the " Next Mariah Carey" but as the " Legendary Ariana Grande". I am telling you she will be the biggest thing that hit the stage. So watch out for her because she is coming in with an army. Catch you later Ariantors.
