Celebrity Weekly: Selena Gomez (Hispanic Heritage Month)

Selena Gomez has become one of the biggest stars of her generation. She is absolutely amazing so sit back, and read about this lady.



Selena Marie Gomez was born in Grand Prairie, Texas on July 22, 1992. Her mother had her when she was 16. Her Grandparents took care of her as a child while her parents went to school. Her Parents, Ricardo Joel Gomez and Amanda Dawn Cornett, divorced when she was only five. She has two half-sisters from her mother and her second husband, and her father with his second wife. Her and Her mother struggled when she was a kid. She earned a high school diploma through homeschooling in May 2010.

Selena began liking acting watching her mother in theater. She booked her first role on Barney and Friends in 2002 with Demi Lovato. Gomez appeared in fourteen episodes of the show throughout 2002 to 2004, though was let go by the show's producers as she was getting "too old" for the series. She got a couple of role while working on Barney like Spy Kids 3-D:Game Over in 2003, and Walker, Texas Ranger: Trial by Fire in 2005.

After Her time on Barney, Gomez and Lovato began auditioning for Disney Channel. Gomez made a guest appearance in a episode of the Disney series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody in 2006. She booked a recurring role on Hannah Montana. She later auditioned for a role in the Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place, ultimately landing the lead role of Alex Russo. She and her mother moved to Hollywood for the role while it became such a hit. After Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus gain some fame from Disney, the three became known as the “Disney Girls”. Their careers were constantly compared to one another. She began secretly dating Nick Jonas around 2007-2008.  There were constant rumors of beef going on between Gomez and Cyrus since Cyrus previously dated Nick. Forbes magazine later listed Gomez as one of the "Eight Hot Kid Stars to Watch" in 2008.

As Wizards of Waverly Place builds its fame, Gomez began doing some stuff on her own. She appeared on Several Disney Shows including, Sunny with A Chance with Lovato, Studio DC: Almost Live alongside various other Disney stars, and many more. She even contributed to several soundtracks like Tinker Bell. She got the lead role in Another Cinderella Story alongside Drew Seeley.  The film was released to generally positive reviews, and won the 2010 Writers Guild of America Award for Children's script-long form or special. She also recorded 3 songs for the soundtrack, and “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” was a commercial success.  She was signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records, who had already signed both Cyrus and Lovato.
She launched her own production company, July Moon Production, partnered with XYZ Films. She was suppose to release 2 films from the Company even going as far as announcing it, but it never happened. Gomez, along with Lovato, starred in the Disney Channel film Princess Protection Program, which aired in June 2009. It did really well, and had 8.5 million viewers during its premiere.

For the film, Gomez and Lovato recorded the song "One and the Same", which was later released as a promotional single. In August 2009, She starred in Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie, and it aired to an audience of 11.4 million viewers making it the #1 scripted telecast in 2009. It also became Disney Channel's second most-viewed film premiere after High School Musical 2. It even won its second Emmy for "Outstanding Children's Program".

Selena began to cross over into music so she formed the band, Selena Gomez and the Scene. The group released their debut studio album in August 2009, and it became Gold Certified. She gained some success with the song “Naturally”. During this time She and Nick Jonas ended their relationship. She was linked to Taylor Lautner for several months until reports of a break up. She got back together with Jonas until they broke up a couple of months after. She became the spokesperson for several companies including State Farms, and Sears’ back-to-school campaign. In 2010, she starred in the book-based movie “Ramona and Beezus”. Gomez's band released their second studio album that same year, achieving further success and becoming their second album to be certified. A Year Without Rain debuted in the United States at number four, selling 66,000 copies in its first week. The album has so far spawned two top forty singles in the United States, lead single, "Round & Round", and the title track "A Year Without Rain".

She launched her first fashion line "Dream out Loud by Selena Gomez" in 2010. After going to the Vanity Fair Oscar Party with Justin Bieber in 2011, they confirmed their relationship. They became a huge power couple even labeled "Jelena". She starred in the movie Monte Carlo that same year. Selena Gomez & the Scene released their third and final studio album that same year, with the album's second single receiving a 4x Platinum certification.

In 2012 she announced that she is taking a hiatus from music to focus more on acting. That same year Wizard of Waverly Place ended after 4 years. She later starred in Spring Breakers, which was her most controversial role for her, and Vanessa Hudgens who was also apart of the Disney Franchise. n early November 2012, it was widely reported that Gomez and Bieber had ended their relationship after approximately two years together then they got back together a month after.

Even though she announced her hiatus from music, she was working on her debut album "Stars Dance".  The lead single, "Come & Get It" was her biggest hit song. It became her first top ten hit in the United States, and her most successful song on pop radio. Her debut album, Stars Dance, was released on July 23, 2013. It became her first album to top the Billboard 200, and gave Gomez the highest first week sales of her career. She went on the Stars Dance tour that year, and it was a success.  She also starred in the Disney channel special The Wizards Return: Alex vs. Alex that year. Gomez spent two weeks at Dawn at The Meadows, a treatment center in Wickenburg, Arizona that specializes in treating addiction and trauma in young people. A lot of people believed she was there for Depression after her break-up with Selena Gomez.

It was confirmed in September that Gomez had signed a new contract with Interscope and had begun working on her second studio album. Gomez released a compilation album, For You, to finalize her deal with Hollywood Records. It was all of her greatest hits, and included the song "Heart Wants What it Wants". She wrote the song about Justin Bieber, and it did really well. She is currently working with Zedd, Dreamlab and the LA-based producer Ruffian on her second studio album.
